DTF Heat Transfers — Full-Color, Photo-Quality Printing
Direct-to-Film transfers deliver crisp, vibrant, extremely durable prints on nearly any garment — cotton, poly, blends, hi-vis, and hard-to-print fabrics.
What Is DTF Heat Transfers?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a modern printing technology where full-color designs are printed onto a special polyester film, dusted with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat-pressed onto the final garment. The result is a soft, stretchy, high-detail print that lives through hundreds of wash cycles.
How It Works
Your artwork is prepared and separated for CMYK+white ink DTF printing.
The design is printed onto specialty PET film in reverse.
Adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured under heat.
The finished transfer is heat-pressed onto the garment at ~305°F under high pressure for ~15 seconds.
The film peels away, leaving a soft, durable, full-color print bonded to the fabric.
Advantages & Limitations
Advantages
- Photo-quality full-color reproduction — including gradients, small text, and complex illustrations.
- Works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, canvas, and even hi-vis safety apparel.
- Extremely durable — resists cracking, peeling, and washing better than screen-print plastisol on many fabrics.
- No color-count limits — one-color logos and 12-color illustrations cost the same to produce.
- Small-run friendly — as few as 1 unit at similar per-unit pricing to 100.
Limitations
- Not ideal for extremely large full-back prints on stretchy performance fabrics (choose sublimation instead).
- Slightly noticeable hand-feel on very thin fabrics compared to sublimation.
- Not compatible with hard non-porous surfaces (use UV DTF for those).

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do DTF prints last?
Properly-cared-for DTF prints outlast the garment — 50+ wash cycles is common.
Can you print my photograph on a shirt?
Yes — DTF is one of the best methods for photo-quality reproduction on garments.
What's the max print size?
Standard is up to 15″ × 21″ for adult apparel. Larger sizes possible on specialty presses.
Can DTF go on dark shirts?
